Tun Hj. Abdul Malek Charisma in administrative fields was prominent when he held several important posts at state level and also federal. Between positions that were once held before he was appointed as yang Di-Pertua Negei Melaka were:
1917 - Malay Administrative Officer (M.A.S)
- Assistant District Officer of Kuala Pilah
1921 - Seremban District Officer in ‘Malayan Civil Service (M.C.S)
1922 - 1925 - Secretary at Land Office Jelebu, Seremban, Rembau, Majlis Bandaran Seremban and also Vehicle Licensing Officer at Negeri Sembilan
1927 - 1938 - Officer in Land Office at Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Selangor and Perak
1938 - Visited England
1942 - Land Collector Officer in Kuala Lumpur
1945 - District Officer of Tampin
1946 - Acting Hakim of Selangor district and Tanjung Malim, Perak, Malayan Union Secretariat's Assistant Secretary at Kuala Lumpur
1948 - 1953 - Chief Minister of Negeri Sembilan
1954 - Member of Appointment And Promotion Board of Public Services
1957 -1959 - Speaker of Federal Law Council (replace The Honourable Raja Tun Uda until 27th June 1959)
He also was a member of Federal Legislation Council. He served in social service, before serving in Federation of Malaya Public Services Commission. Tun Abdul Malek is the third Malay child to become the Speaker of Federal Legislation Council to replace The Honourable Tun Uda's King up to 27th June 1959, when ‘Dewan Rakyat’ disbanded for general election on July 1959.
As Tun Hj. Abdul Malek’s wide experience as a leader, he has been designated as yang Di-Pertua Malacca State on 31st August 1959. On 31 August 1963, his service was expand for 2nd term. On the following September 1967, his service was expand for the third term for 4 years.
As Tun Hj. Abdul Malek is a dedicated and responsible leader, he has been designated as yang Di-Pertua Negeri Melaka on 31st August 1959 by the first Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di- Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Rahman Ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Muhammad at Istana Negara. Tun holds the position of Yang di-Pertua Negeri for 12 years in order to replace yang first Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Leong Yew Koh.
