Tun Syed Zahiruddin bin Syed Hassan had received early education at Sekolah Melayu Tapah Perak. He studied there for a year from 1924 to 1925. Then he extends his schooling at Sekolah Melayu Pondok Tanjung for 4 years from 1925 to 1929 and furthers to Clifford School, Kuala Kangsar, Perak. In year 1930, he enters Maktab Melayu Kuala Kangsar and passed Senior Cambridge.

His excellence and intelligence has enabled him to be selected to continue studying at Raffles College, Singapore in year 1938 to 1941 and successfully obtain Diploma in Literature. During schooling, he is an active student in various fields of sports like football, hockey, tennis and cricket.
