After he ends his studies at college in year 1946 by getting outstanding success in “Senior Cambridge " exams, he embarked on his career as a clerk in Treasury Office Alor Setar in year 1948-1955. Based on his leadership and qualification, he was designated as Kedah Chief Minister on 14th December 1967 till 1978.
After 11 years holding this post, Tun Syed Ahmad has shown his charisma as a leader when he makes various progress to increase living standard of people so that Kedah state would become better and developed.
Based on its leadership and qualification, he was designated as Deputy Home Affairs Minister in 1978 until September 1982. In same-time, he also holds the post as High Commissioner in Singapore for two years up to year 1984 and after that he was appointed as Tuan Yang Terutama Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Melaka.
b) Politics
His involvement in political arena was productive since he was studying in Kolej Sultan Abdul Hamid. In college, he likes to read books regarding independence and patriotism produced by an Indonesia writer. Between the year 1951 and 1952, located in a house at Sungai Korok, Alor Setar, Kedah, Tun Syed Ahmad along with his friends has established ' Malay Youth Loyalty's Force ' with headed by Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Bin Mohamad (Tun). This was a volunteer group that helps UMNO.
Tun Syed Ahmad was chosen to compete in federal election to grab the Federal Legislative Council’s seat in 1955. In that election Tun Syed Ahmad won with a big majority. Then he was designated as Federal Legislative Council’s Member and he was actively in pursuing independence of Malaya. After Malaya has achieved independence, Tun Syed Ahmad was chosen to contest in national election in year 1959. He won the election for State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Padang Assert. Then he was appointed as State Legislative Assembly Member (MMKN) and Senate Member of Kedah State (Senator) on December 1967.
Upon public’s confidence on his authority, Tun Syed Ahmad holds a few important positions in UMNO, starting from President of UMNO Negotiation Committee in State level and Barisan Nasional Kedah (1967 1978), furthers to UMNO Supreme Council (1968-1978) for 10 years. In year 1978-1984 he was appointed as Deputy Chairman of UMNO Negotiation Committee in State level and Barisan Nasional Kedah.
